Selected Poems, Robert Frost

Robert Frost is described as America’s unofficial poet laureate, “Yankee of Yankees and glad of it”, though not without criticism (as any successful person will inevitably face). He never considered himself a nature writer, stating that there was often a man in his lyrics, but we know that nature writing does not necessarily exclude the presence of humans. Rather than intending to increase our knowledge or appreciation of the natural world as a naturalist might do, he simply, matter of factly, acknowledges nature as another character in our lives, working against us as much as it works for us. On a sunny spring day, it’s working for us.

Robert Frost was born in San Francisco moved to Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1884 following his father’s death, returning to New England where his ancestors were from. Frost's first book was published around the age of 40, but he would go on to win a record four Pulitzer Prizes and become the most famous poet of his time, before his death at the age of 88.
