The Frayed Atlantic Edge, David Gange

The Frayed Atlantic Edge is a history of Britain and Ireland as seen from the sea. Travelling by kayak David Gange paddles the edges of Atlantic Britain in all weathers and alongside curious wildlife, telling captivating stories of underestimated coastlines and their communities. This page from its Connacht chapter begins with one of our personal favourite images from the book, and like those gentians unfurls into a glowing insight to the legacy left by Tim and Máiréad Robinson. Gange’s touching tribute to Máiréad who passed just a week before her partner Tim can be read here.

David Gange is Senior Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Birmingham and has published history books with Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press and Oneworld and was a research fellow at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The Frayed Atlantic Edge was BBC Countryfile’s Book of the Month (August 2019), New Statesman Book of the Year 2019 and shortlisted for the Highland Book Prize. Gange is currently working on two new book projects — Afloat: Small Boats & Sea Spray and Being Littoral:  Rethinking Atlantic Britain and Ireland.
